This page serves as a quick comparison between the Chain of Lakes and Clearwater Lake. The purpose of this page is not to say one is better than the other, it is to simply highlight some of the many differences in owning at Clearwater Lake versus owning on a lake on the Chain of Lakes. Anyone looking to build a dream or summer home in the Northwoods should explore both Clearwater Lake and The Chain to find what best fits their needs and desires.
Differences in the Water:
Total Acreage of Water:
The Chain of Lakes has thousands of acres of water. Clearwater Lake is 356 acres.

Water Color:
The water on the chain is Tamarack stained and carries a high sediment load so it is reddish/brown in color. Clearwater Lake is spring-fed, is deeper, and has a hard sand bottom so the water is a deep blue color. Click Here to see an aerial comparison.

Water Clarity:
The deep spring-fed Clearwater Lake has much better water clarity. On a calm sunny day at Clearwater Lake, watching the fish can be as much fun as catching them!

Water Level:
The level of the Chain of Lakes is dependant upon rainfall totals and is regulated by dams. In years of draught the lakes drop by many feet. Clearwater lake is fed by strong springs and has a healthy outlet. In years of both severe draught and of extreme rain, the level of Clearwater Lake remains consistent.

Activity Level on Water:
Because of the size and popularity of the Chain of Lakes, there is always a high level of activity. Clearwater Lake is private to the Clearwater Lake Club and thus is a quiet, less traveled lake. The jet ski and evening boating restrictions make Clearwater Lake especially quiet from supper time on. If an owner at Clearwater Lake wants a day of being around a bunch of people and activity, they can take their boat a mile down the road to the closest public landing on the Chain. If a Clearwater Lake owner wants to enjoy a quiet night they can simply go out on their deck and enjoy one. If someone who lives on the Chain wants a night of quiet, they have to just hope it's quiet. If they want to have a bunch of activity, they can simply step out their door and become part of the action.

Number of Fish:
The fishing on both the Chain of Lakes and Clearwater Lake is top notch.

Size of Fish:
Because Clearwater Lake has been sparsely fished for over 100 years and has a very healthy eco-system, the fish caught on Clearwater are generally bigger than those caught on the densely fished Chain.

Differences in the Land:
Privacy of Property:
Clearwater Lake is a gated property with private roads and no public lake access. The lots at Clearwater Lake are surrounded by over 700 acres of land that is jointly owned by the Clearwater Lake Club members. The Chain is a very popular desination for people coming up to the Northwoods because it is so easy and convienent to get to. The roads are all public and there are no buffer zones or evening boating restrictions.

Acreage of Property:
When you buy a lot on the Chain, all you have is your piece of land. Many lots are less an acre in size. At Clearwater Lake you own your unit which averages over an acre, plus you have full use of 700 acres of Club property.

Amenities:
A Lot on the Chain does not have amenities. At Clearwater Lake you get parks, tennis courts, a golf course, miles of trails to explore, and hundreds of acres to roam in addition to your unit.

Activity Level:
There are thousands of lots on the Chain of Lakes and many lots are quite close to public roads. Clearwater Lake is a gated community with private roads and no public access. The private roads are set back 700 feet from the lots wherever possible, so when a vehicle does travel the road, the sound is buffered by the woods. If you see someone at Clearwater Lake, you are seeing either a fellow member of the Clearwater Lake Club, or a friend or relative of a member of the Club.

Investment Protection:
Land in the Northwoods is unique and not easy to come by and thus retains its value well. At Clearwater Lake your investment is protected by a set of restrictions that makes sure your investment will never be hurt by a junked vehicle or unsightly building near your home.
